Dec. 2 – Biodiversity, Habitat Loss, Invasive Species

Learning Goals: Understand the factors that could put ecosystems at risk.

Success Criteria: You can describe the effects that habitat loss and invasive species have on local ecosystems.

Handouts:

Entirely new species of animals and plants are being discovered all the time.

The variety of living things is called biodiversity.  In many cases, biodiversity is affected by human activities and some species are driven to extinction.

We have no photos of wooly mammoths because they died out long before cameras were invented.

Sellar's sea cows were discovered in 1741 and completely died out by 1768 due to human activities.
The main cause of species being put at risk is due to habitat loss.

Does this look like the temperate deciduous forests that are suppose to be in this region?
Wildlife bridge are an attempt to allow animals the ability to migrate when roads are built through their homes.
Another threat to the local ecosystem is when foreign species are introduced.  Often, an animal not native to an environment will not survive, but those who do can grow unchecked because they have no natural predators.  This can cause major problems for the local species.  Here are some examples of invasive species.

European Starling
Asian longhorn beetle
Your assignment is to research one invasive species and its effect on a local species (see handouts).

Assignment Due: Tuesday Dec. 10

Homework: Decide on an invasive species and a local species that you would like to research.  Report back tomorrow.

Hint: Have a look at these Ontario websites for a lists of invasive species.
