Dec. 10 – Urban Ecosystems

Learning Goals: Understand the difference between urban ecosystems and natural ecosystems.

Success Criteria: You can describe the difference between urban and natural ecosystems.  You can describe ways that we can help to make urban ecosystems more sustainable.

Handouts:

Today we began with a healthy debate between people who preferred to spend time in cities vs. people who preferred to spend time in a natural environment.  Many good points and some attacks were raised against the other side.

We then took some time to describe urban ecosystems and natural ecosystems (see table in handout).  Then we discussed some ways to make urban environments more sustainable.

Composting helps reduce landfills and produces natural fertilizer.

LEDs help save energy and reduces reliance on lightbulbs that don't last a long.

The CN tower is lit up entirely with LED's and uses less energy than it did before switching to the colourful lights.

Green roofs help insulate buildings to reduce heating and cooling costs as well as cleaning the air and providing valuable green space.
If every building had a green roof...
Homework: Review the test topics.  There were homework questions at the bottom of every handout I've given you.  Now is the time to go back and do them!
